About my work
I am working full-time as a Children's Art Teacher teaching in English in a largely expat (foreigners who typically speak English) community in Hong Kong.
About my work
I had been in touch with some of my father's friends from when he worked here 30 years ago. One of them had been in Canada in my youth, and I have been trusting his guidance and knowledge about Hong Kong. He has been instrumental in helping me get my Hong Kong ID card. As luck would have it he is a partner of a private school that teaches young children (1.5 yrs to 10 yrs of age) art in an English setting. He asked if I was interested to see the place, meet his partner and see where it goes. While in Canada I had provided him with a Resume (CV) package, and after some time of settling in Hong Kong I paid a visit and got interviewed. Worked out well and...well I'm working.
It's a tiny school. I'm working with 2 fine arts graduates. The classes have a maximum of 6 children. Parents pay about $50(CDN)/session of 1 hour 15 minutes. Every class the student finishes a quality art piece on a variety of themes using a variety of art materials and/or techniques.
A bit about me and the school
I am learning alot. I wouldn't expect anything else from what I would do here in HK. I am paid well and my co-workers are wonderful. I am certainly developing a constructive interaction with children and I am learning immensely about child development, teaching children and the full-contact tact of juggling criticism with preaching when discussing a child's progress with classes to the sensitive parents.
"But Doug, how does this fit with your ambitions?"
My university degree is not going to waste. I am applying my web design and graphics skills with various functions of the business. I will be creating the website and various marketing materials, with time.
What else?
I was taking a course in Cantonese with some business people who seem proud of the 5 words they know than being interested in learning more. The teacher was terrible, going into every which diversion we lead her instead of sticking with a particular lesson plan. But I've no regrets - it did well to tide me over until the course I am taking now at the YMCA. The course at the YMCA is sooooo much better - the teacher is great and we're focusing on what seems to be the right aspects of learning Cantonese: tones, tones and more tones!
...go on
Yes I am having immense fun. I keep getting this rush in my heart or head that I'm finally in this land I've always heard about. Hong Kong is a playground for my imagination and an arena for my thoughts.
